Dear Sir/Madam,
Subject: Deplorable State of the Public Transport
I have been asked by the elders of this village to write to you on their behalf to draw your attention to the deplorable state of the public transport in this area.
First, the transport is so poor as to be practically non-existent. The old road, which was constructed years ago, has been washed away at several places by the rains. Worse still, the bridge across the Samba river, which is only a flimsy wooden structure, has been so weakened by the termites that it has been rendered unsafe for vehicles. This means that we have been virtually cut off from the outside world. In emergencies, life can be endangered. For example, one of our village children recently had an attack of malaria. Because of the state of the bridge the ambulance was unable to pass and, as a consequence, we had to carry the child from her home to the far bank of the Samba river, a distance of some five kilometers. The child was lucky to survive.
Not only in emergencies, but also in our everyday lives, we are inconvenienced because of the lack of transport facilities. The farmers complain bitterly that the truck from the cooperative society cannot reach them and that they are, therefore, forced to dump sacks of their produce in the next village for sale. This discourages food production at a time when the nation is trying to encourage farming in rural areas.
The elders would very much like to meet you in this connection and present their case in person. They would be pleased if you could let them know a date in the near future when you could meet them to discuss these pressing problems.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely
Shivam Sah
