Precautions to be taken while writing a composition

The most important question in the English language
Examination relates to Composition. You are asked to write a piece of prose in about 350 words. The objective of this question is to test your ability to express yourself in well-organized, clear, precise, and accurate
English. Your Composition should be logically planned and laid out well. Even the most creative original writing will be awarded a low grade if it contains grammatical and linguistic errors.

Therefore, In this post, I will list up some of the important precautions that one should take while writing an impressive comprehension.

Precautions

  • Answer all parts of the question

Some composition topics have two or more parts. When you are planning and writing your composition, read the question carefully to check that your answer is relevant and that all the parts are answered. Allocate a reasonable proportion of your time to each part of the question.

  • Make Sure Your Answer is Relevant

Underline the keywords in your topic. You may expect a topic, such as: "Describe the major causes of traffic accidents"; but the topic may state "Describe some of the consequences of traffic accidents". Many candidates write irrelevant compositions because they do not fully understand the topic. Choose a topic which you understand or are familiar with.

  • Memorized Material

The composition questions are carefully worded and require an individual response. The treatment of the topic differs from candidate to candidate. No topic states, Write all that you know about the topic. Presenting memorized material or artificially trying to fit the material into the requirements of the topic will be detected by the examiner.

  • Your Composition Must be Long Enough

1. Calculate the average number of words per line in your writing. This usually about eight to ten words.

2. Assume that you must write 300-350 words in about 30 minutes. Do not count the words; count the lines.

3. Practise writing compositions of the length required.

  • Use Simple English

The good style in the English Language is simple. Use short, common words and not long or rare ones. Do not make long sentences with too many subordinate clauses, which your reader may find
confusing. Use one word which could replace a phrase or a clause. That is one of the advantages of having a good vocabulary.

  • Write Legibly
The handwriting of students who obtain credit is better than that of those students who fail. Poor handwriting is regarded as a sign of
laziness and carelessness.

  • Read Regularly

The best way to improve your English and your composition is to read regularly.

1. Do not read old-fashioned books. Read modern books of science
fiction, detective stories romances, and books with a historical theme, adventure, etc. Reading newspapers and standard magazines is also of great help.

2. Regularly reading builds up your vocabulary and helps you to master useful sentence patterns, verb forms, prepositions, articles, etc.

3. Set yourself a daily target and stick to it. Try to read at least twenty pages every day.

4. Do not expect a sudden improvement within a week. After two or three months, your English will definitely improve.
