Question 2
(i) (a) Give any one use of Manganese.
Ans. Manganese is used to strengthen steel. It is also used in dry cell batteries.

(b) Why is copper used in electrical appliances?
Ans. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and therefore it is used in electrical appliances.

(iii) With reference to Bhakra Nangal dam answer the following:

(a) On which river is it situated?
Ans. The dam is situated on river Sutlej, a tributary of river Indus.

(b) Name any two states benefitted by Bhakra Nangal.
Ans. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh are some of the states benefitted by it.

(iv) (a) Mention two advantages of using biogas.
Ans. Biogas has the following advantages: 
✓ It reduces pollution.
✓ It is made from waste materials which are free to use and thus it is a cheaper source of energy.

(b) How has the nuclear power contributed in reducing the pressure on Conventional sources of energy?
Ans. Nuclear power is an extremely efficient source of energy with 1 ton of uranium providing more energy than 3 million tons of coal. It plays the role of an alternative source of energy and thus prevents the conventional sources of energy from getting rapidly depleted.

(i) Mention two ways in which agriculture sector is important for India.
Ans. Agriculture sector is important for India because: 
✓ It provides employment to more than half of the Indian population.
✓ It contributes to about 17% of our total GDP.
✓ It makes provision of food for the increasing population.

(ii) (a) Name two agriculture seasons of India.
Ans. Kharif and Rabi are the two main agricultural seasons of India.

(b) Name one crop that grows in each of the season mentioned by you.
Ans. Rice is grown in kharif season and Wheat is grown in the rabi season.

(iii) With reference to Wheat cultivation answer the following:

(a) Name the soil found suitable for its growth.
Ans. Clayey loamy soil or Alluvial soil are found suitable for it's growth.

(b) Name the state that is the largest producer of this crop in India.
Ans. Punjab is the largest producer of this crop.

(c) Why is this crop not grown in southern parts of India?
Ans. Wheat requires that at the time of sowing the temperature should not rise beyond 15 °C. This is not possible in southern parts of India where the temperatures in winter are higher than 15 °C. Hence wheat is not grown in south India.

(iv) (a) Name the largest producer of tea in India.
Ans. Assam is the largest producer of Tea in India.

(b) What is GINNING?
Ans. GINNING is the seperation of seed and short fibres or linters from the raw material fibre called lint.

(c) Why is PRUNING essential for tea crop?
Ans. PRUNING is essential for Tea crop because:
✓ It helps in producing newer and softer leaves.
✓ It facilitates picking up of leaves by women.

(i) Differentiate between public sector and private sector industry giving suitable
example for each from India.
Ans. Public sector Industries are owned and managed by Central and State Governments. Ex - Bharat Electronics Ltd. Whereas private sector Industries are owned and managed by Businessmen or private individuals. Ex - Tata Steel Ltd.

(ii) Give two ways in which cotton textile industry is important for India.
Ans. Cotton textile industry is important for India because:
✓ It gives employment to almost 40 per cent of the Indian population.
✓ It exports huge quantities of cotton to foreign countries and thus helps in earning foreign exchange.

(iii) With reference to Rourkela steel plant answer the following:
(a) Where is it located?
Ans. It is located at Rourkela in Northern Odisha.

(b) Which country helped India to establish this steel plant?
Ans. Germany had helped India in establishing this steel plant.

(c) From where does it get its iron ore requirement?
Ans. It gets iron ore from Bonaigarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Naomundi.

(iv) (a) What are the benefits of using petrochemical products? (Any two)
Ans. Petrochemical products has the following advantages: 
✓ They are cheaper and durable
✓ They contribute to national income.

(b) How has the electronic industry revolutionized the entertainment sector?
Ans. The electronic industry revolutionized the entertainment sector by the invention of Television and Audio Systems.

(i) Mention two advantages of using waterways.
Ans. Advantages of using waterways are: 
✓ It is the cheapest means of transport.
✓ It is best suitable for carrying heavy and bulky goods.

(ii) Differentiate between national highway and state highway.
Ans. National Highway:
✓ It is administered by Central Government.
✓ It connects major states and ports within the country.
State Highway: 
✓ It is administered and maintained by State Government.
✓ It connects major towns and cities within the state.

(iii) Mention three benefits of Golden quadrilateral.
Ans. Benefits of Golden quadrilateral are:
✓ It connects four mega-cities within the country.
✓ It saves traveling time and expenses.
✓ It reduces traffic on other highways and expressways.
✓ It ensures swift and smooth travel between different states.

(iv) What are the three disadvantages of using air transport?
Ans. Disadvantages of using Air transport are:
✓ It is an expensive and costly means of transport.
✓ It has limited carrying capacity.
✓ It is dependable on weather conditions.

(i) Why is there a need for waste management in India? (Two points)
Ans. Waste management is needed in India because:
✓ Waste is becoming a major threat for terrestrial and aquatic life.
✓ Waste should be managed in order to keep our environment clean and to prevent diseases.

(ii) Segregation considered a safe method of waste disposal. Explain.
Ans. Segregation of waste is considered a safe method of waste disposal because it allows us to differentiate between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. If waste is segregated accurately then it would be easy to recycle and reuse the dry waste as well as compost the wet waste.

(iii) Mention three ways that may be used in India to reduce waste.
Ans. Methods to reduce waste are:
✓ Preparing biogas and compost pits.
✓ Recycling and reusing dry waste.
✓ making less use of non-biodegradable products.

(iv) Mention three reasons as to why the dumping of waste may be harmful.
Ans. Dumping of waste may be harmful in the following ways:
✓ It creates wetlands and thus contributes to land pollution.
✓ It becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects.
✓ The waste may react with ground water and pollute it.
